Golf and databases. Those have been my two passions for as long as I can remember. I learned early only on not to reveal that on first dates.
Those passions were bound to collide. While I was working on my accounting degree at the University of Idaho, I was the guy constantly driving professors crazy with the latest and greatest program for collecting and analyzing data – about pro golfers, postal routes, even my fellow students at Idaho.
When I graduated, a day of immense celebration among the accounting faculty, I immediately set about pursuing an entrepreneurial career. My motto: If your business had customers, I could craft the tools to make them ecstatic with your customer service.
It was while building a particularly complex system for an international client in 2002 that I decided to take a rare vacation, which I unofficially kicked off with a round of golf with Ed Vining. When we stumbled across the subject of rewards points for golfers – a commodity that didn’t exist at the time – my database-driven brain began to whirl.
Needless to say, I spent my vacation sitting on the beach … with a laptop. Straight Shot Solutions may have been born on a fairway, but, in keeping with my game, it’s probably appropriate that it was nurtured in the sand.
